The importance of the Pearl River Delta assured the South China Morning Post and the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce success with the first conference they jointly hosted. Entitled, "The Pearl River Delta: Forging a New Force", the conference from 8-9 July 2002, brought together 450 leading politicians, academics and businessmen from Hong Kong and the mainland, with the opening address delivered by Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa.

Following this huge success, the 2 organisers are joining hands again to organise The Second Pearl River Delta Conference on October 17.

The conclusion of CEPA and the recent outbreak of SARS are reinforcing the pressing need for Hong Kong to create new institutional and infrastructure-based links with the Delta. This conference will feature policy makers, business people, and opinion shapers in a dialogue-oriented forum on the issues that will guide Hong Kong's emerging role as international hub for the PRD.

These issues will be discussed at the Conference:

  • Hong Kong and the PRD
  • Building the Bridge and Other Gaps in Infrastructure
  • International Competitiveness for PRD
  • Hong Kong as a Producer Services Hub
  • Latest Developments on Ports and Logistics
  • Views from Guangdong’s Leading Cities
  • Regional Planning and Coordination for the Pearl River Delta
